Advancing the Center for Abnormal Placentation
Your support of the Center for Abnormal Placentation (CAP) will help us change the lives of countless families cared for by Hackensack Meridian Health. Our goal is to raise $500,000 from generous friends, patients and families to support the expansion of our clinical training and clinical research programs.
About the Center for Abnormal Placentation
The Center for Abnormal Placentation, led by Abdulla Al-Khan, MD, FACS, FACOG, is at the forefront of care and research to save women and babies from devastating and deadly illnesses that affect hundreds of women annually.
The Center, located in the Donna A. Sanzari Women’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, is the first in the nation to specialize in the diagnosis and surgical management of placenta accreta. Typically, the placenta attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. In cases of placenta acrreta, the placenta invades the uterine wall instead, which can lead to excessive hemorrhaging for the woman when the baby is born.
This is a rare condition that occurs in about 1 in 500 pregnant patients with prior cesarean deliveries and is one of the leading causes of maternal death in the United States.
The center has operated on more than 500 cases with zero maternal mortality.
How does your donation impact our patients and their families?
A philanthropic investment in fellowship and research programs is vital for the future of the Center for Abnormal Placentation and will enable us to fulfill our commitment to our patients and their families by:
Expanding Clinical Training Programs
Hackensack University Medical Center is one of only two locations in the state with maternal/fetal health fellowships. Growing the clinical fellowship and residency program will help us train the next generation of providers at the hospital, increase patient services and aid in the recruitment of talented clinicians.
Expanding Clinical Research Programs
Groundbreaking research by Hackensack Meridian Health clinicians together with scientists at the Center for Innovation and Discovery is focussed on the development of early non-invasive diagnostic tools to identify women with abnormally invasive placentas. This will help advance treatment options for placenta accreta and other complex and challenging conditions experienced by women and their babies.
Thank you for helping us make a difference for our patients and their families!
