About the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Hackensack Meridian Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has about 940 admissions per year. Approximately 80 newborns weigh less than 1,500 grams (approximately 3lbs., 5oz.). To address their medical needs, we provide an array of services including neonatal transport, hyper alimentation (intravenous nutrition), mechanical ventilation, high-frequency oscillation (rapid ventilation up to 900 breaths per minute), body cooling for newborns and inhaled nitric oxide.

The NICU Family Advisory Council is comprised of NICU graduate parents and staff to help the current NICU families, and fundraise and support the NICU at the Hackensack Meridian Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital continue to be a leading hospital and provide best possible care.

The NICUSTRONG Committee kicked off this annual walk to represent the strength of families, babies and the strong bond with the hospital team including physicians, nurses and other clinical and administrative team members. The NICUSTRONG Committee is comprised of NICU graduate parents and team members to help current NICU families, and fundraise to support the NICU at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.

How does funding help?
The annual NICUSTRONG Walk helps fund innovative treatments, cutting-edge equipment to provide exceptional care, much-needed research and supports parent and family needs of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hackensack Meridian Children's Health at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.

Since its inception in 2018, contributions have helped fund:
  • Life-like manikins for vital education purposes;
  • Several parent programs;
  • Vital research to help predict neonatal respiratory outcomes through the mother's blood in the third trimester
  • A family support coordinator - funded in collaboration with March of Dimes - to provide valuable support and resources to families as they adjust to life in the NICU.
With your help, we can continue to support the needs of our #NICUSTRONG babies and their families!
